I was very happy when I read an article that discusses the importance of Juma Khotba. When I lived in Saudi Arabia, I used to attend every juma khotba, and realised the khateeb's speeches used to make me realise how powerful Allah is. Now I am living in England hoping to listen to Juma khotba and feel I am becoming weaker in Islam. I lived near Dammam in Khobar and thank all of those who are working hard to make Islam still powerful. |

These topics were not all topics discussed through Friday prayer, millions of Islamic preachers through millions of mosques all over the world persuade Moslems to spread peace in every region of the world, respecting all religions, and of course discussing social problems and bad behaviours that began to appear in Islamic communities such as discard prayer in it's time, not performing el-zakah. Moslems can overcome all these problems by carrying out god's orders, then we will lead the world again.

These comments are irrelevant and at best laughable! One purpose of a khutba after Salat al Jumaah, is for the Jama'a to think about something till the following Friday. Where are the issues concerning the problems of the Ummah who are dying in wars, in Kosova, Kashmir, South Lebanon? We are ONE brotherhood aren't we? |

I completely agree with the writer about the influence of the Juma Khutba on listeners in our Islamic society. In my viewpoint, the speaker(Imam), could attract his listeners' attention by choosing the topic of the Kutba carefully to reflect events need to be addressed at that time. In addition, he could also make it much influenced by stating some statistics and stories that support his objective of the Kutba

I'm glad to see that someone is bringing up the relevance of topics chosen for Friday Khutba. We have seen an increase in 'generic' topics for khutbas in the USA. On any given Friday, you can be sure that the local mosque is going to discuss a very dry topic delivered in an apathetic tone as that week's Khutba. Although important Islamic concepts are related in the khutba, the references are often repetitive and common knowledge. It would be much more beneficial to the people if topics for the khutba related more to our daily lives, with interesting references, less repetition, and in the language of the country for all to reap the benefits. It is sad when there is a tragedy in a Muslim nation, with much loss of life and the khateeb chooses to speak that Friday about the benefits Ramadaan when Ramadan is still months away. May God reward our efforts. |

I whole heartedly agree that we have to rediscover the powerful Islamic voice of khutba (Friday prayer speech) as an effective tool to get our Islamic message regarding various issues pertaining to us across to our brethen. It should be replacing the traditional western methodologies of rallying, marching, walking etc. This is not to say action is to be replaced with passiveness on the part of the Muslim community, rather, the appeal of the khutba relates to having the undivided attention of the followers who can concentrate on the message being transmitted while being conscious of its value. |

Friday prayer speeches

Few people deny the influence on most listeners of the Juma khutba (Friday prayers speech), the speech by an Islamic scholar before Friday prayers. Since the beginning of Islam and during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Juma khutba has been one of the most effective means of presenting the message and teaching of Islam to the public. It is one of the most important means of educating people, creating an awareness among them and steering them onto the right path. How can we therefore be sure that the Juma khutba will have the desired effect?
One Friday I went to a small mosque in Riyadh. The khutba (speech) I heard that day still reverberates in my ears. The khateeb (speaker) was talking about traffic accidents.
He reminded us of the thousands of people killed and injured annually on our roads - to say nothing of damage to property. What is the way to put a stop to these deadly accidents? What is the judgement of Shariah on reckless drivers who cause harm and possibly death to peaceful and innocent people? This topic was - and still is - vital in the light of statistics showing that we have the third highest rate in terms of road accidents.
As we left the mosque, the congregation was discussing the khutba, the awareness of the speaker and how such issues should be addressed by khateebs and preachers.
How many important social issues should be addressed by Islamic scholars in the light of Shariah in the mosques as people listen to these khateebs and preachers who have their undivided attention. Issues like drugs, bribery, corruption, trade fraud, forgery, robbery and other crimes in the society must be tackled by the Juma khutbas.
Believe me, no television or radio or newspaper will have the effect of the Juma khutba as it can make drastic changes in the life and attitude of people and improve the social situation in the country. It is thus quite essential that the Juma khutba be utilised in the right manner.
